Rosh Hashanah is called the Jewish High Holy Day and is observed during the 10 day period between the 1st day of Rosh Hashanah and the 10th day (Yom Kippur). Rosh Hashanah occurs on the 1st and 2nd day of TISHRI. In Hebrew Rosh Hashanah literally means "head of the year" or "first of the year". Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. This name is somewhat deceptive because there is little similarity between Rosh Hashanah, one of the holidays of the year and the American midnight drinking bash and daytime football game. There is however one important similarity between the Jewish and the American one and that is a time to plan for a better life, making resolutions and doing introspection. Looking at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year.
The bible refers to the holidays as Yom Ho - Zikkaron ( the day of Rememberance) or Yom Terush (the day of the sounding of the shofar). The shofar is a ram's horn which is blown somewhat like a trumpet. One of the most important observances of this holiday is hearing the sounding of the Shofar in the Synagogue.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the most important of all Jewish holidays and the only holidays that are purely religious, as they are not related to any historial or natural event. It is a time of family gatherings, special meals, sweet food, and party atmoshere.
